Anne Frank Tree LIDAR data render

Here are some pictures of the work Bremer Studios did for the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, in collaboration with Delft University of Technology - in 3 steps!

About the Anna Frank Tree:
The Anna Frank Tree, located in Amsterdam close to the building where Anne and her family was hiding during world war II, was featured in her The Diary of a Young Girl and therefore considered a piece of history. The 170 years old horse-chestnut tree was attacked by Fungus and almost cut down for safety reason on 20 November 2007. The Foundation Support Anne Frank Tree tried to undertake some maintenance, but on 23 August 2010, the tree was blown down during a storm.

1. We made a realistic render of the point dataset obtained from a LIDAR laser scan of the Anne Frank Tree. You see below a view of the data, which consists of 2.5 million x,y,z datapoints.

2. Here you see the dataset rendered as a voxel grid in our custom ray tracing program. Better hu?

3. And this is the final scientific visualization of the tree thanks to the custom algorithm we developed that assigns a color to each voxel based on its location and local point density. We rendered the tree right on time, as it collapsed only two months later.

An enriching experience and our little contribution to history preservation :)
